Elizabethkingia Bacteria Outbreak - April 18, 2016

Recently, throughout the Midwestern United States there has been an outbreak of the bacteria Elizabethkingia anophelis. The current outbreak in Wisconsin has resulted in 56 confirmed cases and 17 deaths. The bacteria has also been spread to Michigan, which has resulted in one confirmed death. Since the discovery of the bacteria is still relatively new, researchers are not one hundred percent sure how it is transmitted. Outbreaks of Elizabethkingia are known to be previously healthcare related, however the source of the current outbreak is yet to be determined. Therefore, "infection prevention solely through treatment and cleaning may be challenging."

With outbreaks that may be healthcare associated, it is important that healthcare staff and management are actively taking steps towards prevention and infection control. UVC Cleaning Systems can help to reduce potential healthcare associated bacteria infections, such as Elizabethkingia anophelis.
