Bacterial meningitis contracted at Life Time Fitness Day Camp

A recent outbreak of bacterial meningitis recently occurred at the Life Time Fitness Day Camp in Rochester Hills, MI between July 1 and July 11, 2016 with 219 children ages 5-12 being exposed (Steckroth, 2016).  Bacterial meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the meninges and can affect people of any age.   A person must have direct contact with an infected person’s saliva or nasal secretions and if exposed, the incubation period is one to ten days.”.  Oakland County Health Division suggests practicing healthy habits such as turning when sneezing or coughing, washing your hands with warm soapy water, and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Antibiotics are given for people who are infected and the antibiotics treatment will keep the meningitis disease from spreading and help get the infected well (Bacterial, 2016).

The implementation of UVC Cleaning Systems mobile disinfection equipment at public facilities like Life Time Fitness Day Camp can help reduce the bacteria load on all hard surfaces. Direct contact between doorknobs, toys, utensils, and other highly touched surfaces can spread pathogens.  UVC disinfection enhances the manual cleaning process with “no touch“ technology that eliminates pathogens on exposed surfaces and hard to clean items like electronics and various surfaces.  Schools, daycares, exercise facilities are all places where infection pathogens can be passed on through high touch surfaces. “No touch” cleaning technology is another tool to enhance manual cleaning in large public places.

The entire UVC Cleaning Systems Company sends it condolences to the Malter family for their loss.
